Benjamin's King Of The Week Presentation About Knights

Don't mind myself looking all strange, I was not thinking that I was in the video, and I was keeping up with Benjamin in case he would loose track of where he was. He did wonderful, and we were very proud of him!

King Of The Week - Benjamin

This handsome little boy got the honor as one of the first ones to become the King of the Week in the class. That's an honor that is earned with hard work, always turning in your homework neat and in time, but also showing respect and being a great citizen in and out of the classroom.

He got to present a poster about himself on the Friday and so did the Queen of the week, that this week was his classmate Fiana. As another thing to being a King or Queen, they also need to prepare a speech and have a presentation about something that interest them and that is informative to the class. They can't just bring a toy and say that this is my Transformer...it has to be a little bit more educational than that.

Benjamin choose to hold a presentation about Knights and he brought his armor, his helmet, shield and sword to show and to speak about how someone became a Knight.

He has a book about Knights, and he knew it almost by heart, and talked about famous Knights, that the little boys had to help and work for the big Knights, what they were wearing and how for protection and where they lived. The kids loved it and he really impressed the teacher with this presentation! Great job Ben!!

After the presentation, the parents were invited to have "tea" with the King and Queen at the castle! A little table and plastic cups were set up for the occasion and as you can see, we had company of the British Royal Family on the pictures in the background.

All About Apples In September

Like I wrote earlier, we have had a lot going on in First Grade this year, and even if it's posts that should have been posted in the fall, I'm trying to atleast get them on the blog, for my documentation and so that family members can take part of their activities and performances.

In September, it was all about apples. We had the Johnny Appleseed performance, that I posted earlier, and we had lessons about apples, and we made apple pies together with the kids, that we then took home to bake and enjoy with the family.

As room mom, I ended up baking a few extra pies to bring back to school!

Isabella and Benjamin were excited to find their pies already bakes when they came home from school, and they were ready to have some for afternoon snack. Added vanilla ice cream to make the most of it! Very much appreciated!

Johnny Appleseed Performance

This school year, we quickly learned that Social Studies and Science would be big subjects for this first grade class. We started off in October to learn about apples and everything was about apples. Math problems were about apples, the kids were writing about apples, and we had experiments about apples, and even baked apple pies with the kids in the cafeteria and at home. Pictures from that in another post, have to find them first. 

Anyway, to end this chapter about apples, the kids were practicing a performance about Johnny Appleseed, a true American Legend, read more about him here.

The pictures below is from the performance, and as a Classroom mom, I was in class helping practicing the lines with kids and getting things ready for the big day when the rest of the parents were invited.

Benjamin's President Presentation

Benjamin and Isabella have a teacher this year that really works hard to make the kids get used to holding speeches, presentations and public speaking. I don't remember at all having these things during our early years in school, but I must say that I think it's a wonderful idea. As I'm the room mom and spend a very large amount of hours in the classroom every week volunteering (thereof less time over the school year for the blog..) I have seen large changes over the year not just in my own kids, but in most kids in the class. They are more confident, and feel proud of their work and their presentation.

A lot of these presentations and performances do take a lot of work and extra involvement from the parents and especially me to practice and prepare for these things, and every month it's about something new that fits with season and holidays and special events.

Considering the current change of President in the United States of America, I thought it would be a good start to finally post the pictures and movie clip from the kids when they were the President of the day.

Around election time in November, the Social Studies in class were used to learn about Presidency and the current and past Presidents. The kids got the honor to be a "President of the day" and to hold a speech about anything regarding the President of the United States. It had to be an educational presentation and they were to dress apart.
