Pink Sky

We had a nice sunset the other night. I didn't have time to get out and really see it in all it's beauty, but this is what I saw from our backyard, over the neighbors roof, when I was about to take Rusty inside. It still amaze me how pink the sky sometimes is, while other days it's more yellow into a dark orange. Either way, it's beautiful to me!

Beautiful Countryside

Passed through this very beautiful gate while leaving the Camel Farm.

The desert sometimes surprises you! It's not just sand and dust around here. The drive to/from the Camel Farm took us through the countryside, and we passed by not just Orange-and Lemon tree orchards, but lots and lots of sheep that were grazing on the fields around. Many farmers here are able to pull water from the Colorado river through water systems, and it's sometimes surprisingly green on some fields. I still have to take the kids to an orchard and let them pick oranges, that will be a great photo opportunity!

Lemon trees full of ripe fruit!

Orange trees, or maybe the smaller "Cuties". They have both around here, and I'm not totally sure which ones these were.

The kids thought it was fun to see all these sheep, and as there were no cars in sight out here in the country, I could drive really slow with windows down to let them have a good look!

The Camel Farm

Last Sunday, I took the kids and met up with my friend S and her daughter at the Camel Farm a bit outside of town. Both S and I had said we wanted to go sometime, and we picked a great warm day, not too hot as it was a covered overcast, so it was perfect to spend a couple of hours outside.

I didn't really know what to expect, I knew that it would be camels of course, but also a few sheep and other animals. We were surprised of the amount of animals that were there, and the kids had a great time feeding them and looking at the different ones. It was a great day, the kids got along nice and we took our time and we had even brought picnic lunch with us, so we had no rush to get home. These are a few pictures from our day!

There were a few newborn goats, some even so new that the cord had not dried up yet to fall off! The kids loved the babies, but of course they were too young to be fed by the pellets, and stayed in the back.

One of the highlights of the visit was the Zeedonk! I had never seen one before and she was so friendly and the kids were able to pet and feed her with no problem. If you click on the picture above, it comes up bigger, but in short: A Zeedonk is a hybrid of zebra stallion and a female donkey. She was very used to people and to be fed, so the sign that they might be aggressive, didn't apply to this one.

Another favorite were the Mini donkeys.

My youngest ones were standing feeding some goats, when they suddenly saw that there were two young babies. "Look mommy, they are twins- just like us!"

A sleeping Wallaroo.

Isabella was a little skeptic about petting "Little Ru" from Winnie The Pooh.

A small turtle...

 ...and a big turtle!

Mr. Peacock wasn't in the mood of showing off his beautiful feathers.

It was a bit of a shame, but we couldn't pet or come close to any of the camels. They were not safe to be petted, was the instructions that we received, and we had to stay behind the ropes. That made it not so interesting for the kids, but at least we got to see the camels here in the desert!

This guy had a hard time being away from his females...
he had froth all over him, shaking and making roaring sounds..

We ended up standing a long time by these birds, I don't remember what they were called. The thing was that the male bird all of a sudden started to wave his wings really fast, walking toward the kids, and they thought it was hilarious, and laughed so hard. Then of course they tried to make him do it again, with lots of encouragement and waving from all of them! So funny. It worked too!

 He's doing it again!

After scrubbing hands in the restroom, it was nice to dig into the picnic. I had packed sandwiches, fruits and lots of little snacks and plenty of drinks! Even if it was overcast, it was very warm and a lot of fluid was necessary! Such a fun day!

Before we left, we paid the Zeedonk another visit to give him the leftover pellets.
